New Items
Custom Designed Jewelry
eBay has a new feature called Want It Now, whereby people who are looking for particularly rare items post messages describing what they want, and see if anyone reading the posts has that item to sell.  I go there every few days to see if anyone is looking for jewelry or beads.  I found a man who wanted to surprise his wife with a special necklace to commemorate the birth of their first child.  The parents were both born in January, and the baby was born in October, so that man wanted a pendant with two garnets and an opal.
I happen to know where to get such supplies wholesale, so I created a special listing just for him, offering to design a pendant with his preferred stones.  He bought the item, and thus was born the new idea to create custom jewelry.
This new feature in currently only on eBay, but I will try to get it on the online site in the near future.  I have custom made pendants available in three sizes, two metals, five shapes, and a couple dozen different gemstones.  (NOTE: I do NOT have any 3-stone pendants listed yet, as the pricing guidelines will be tricky, given the vastly different costs for different stones, but if anyone reading this is intrigued by this idea, they can write to me with their suggestions and I can give a price estimate.)  These pendants are not cloudy gemstones set in thin settings; they are really high-quality gems in good 14kt gold filled or sterling silver settings.  If you are looking for a special pendant for a loved one, please feel free to check these out.

Stone Fun Facts
I have profiled so many stones that I am truly starting to run out of ideas!
Below, I am re-running the very first Stone Fun Facts entry, from June 2003.  In looking over it, I found that it as pretty "thin," having been my first one and my not having done very much research for it.  So I got a little more information this week and have padded the profile out!  Enjoy.

Amethyst
** Amethyst is the purple form of Quartz.  Traces of manganese create the purple color, while traces of iron are responsible for the depth of the color.
** This stone is purported to calm the mind, enhance meditation, relax the body, and enhance dream state. It is a calming stone that soothes those in constant mental activity, and thus has earned the nickname of "Nature's Tranquilizer."
** Physically, Amethyst is thought to prevent drunkenness, ease headache (if placed on the forehead) & toothache.  It also is thought to aid insomnia when placed under the pillow (its similarity in color to lavender, a well-known calming flower, might be responsible for this belief.)  Ancient Greeks were so convinced it would allow a person to drink as much wine as they liked without getting drunk that they created wine goblets made from Amethyst!
** The word "amethyst" is from the Greek amethystos, from a (anti) + methyein (to be drunk), from methy, "wine."
** Amethyst is the official birthstone of February, and is used for the 4th, 6th, and 17th wedding anniversaries.
** In Greek myths, the god of wine, Dionysus, fell in love with a nymph, who ran from him.  In a panic, she called upon Artemis, goddess of maidens, to save her from the drunken god.  Artemis turned her into a white quartz statue.  Later, Dionysus felt badly for what he had done.  As a sign of affection, he poured wine over the statue.  As the white turned to purple, he vowed that anyone who wore an amethyst would be immune to drunkenness.

Ephemerala Junior
My 8-year-old son always likes to help me with business--he'll pack envelopes, count inventory, and come up with sale ideas.  Today, he was looking for a way to earn some money, so I suggested he set up a table on the street and sell jewelry.  He thought that was a great idea, and used $20 of his own money to buy a bunch of pendants from me (at a steep discount, of course).  He was outside for about two hours, and actually made a sale.  He plans to continue this up through Christmas so long as the weather stays reasonable.  I will send some business cards out with him from now on, and if I happen to get a sale from this area, I will assume it was because of his salesman skills, and give him half of the profits!
