New Items
Carved Fluorite Bowls
These are really beautiful and intricate.  Four different ones to choose from.  Everything from purple to green with the in-betweens as well.  Only one of each, so don't hesitate.

New Marbles
For one thing, we've finally separated our Fluorite Marbles into colors.  It just makes things a lot clearer than having one listing for them all.  For another thing, we've added a few new stones.

Purple Fluorite
Nice, dark purple, very Amethyst-like.  Maybe some stripes now and then; Fluorite can be so unpredictable.

Lavender Fluorite
A lighter purple, again, some light stripes might be present.

Colorless Fluorite
Not technically "colorless," but this stone really doesn't sparkle.  It's anything from clear to light yellow, usually slightly cloudy, maybe some extremely light stripes of pink or light blue are showing.  Nice in its own right, but not the prettiest Fluorite we carry.

Striped Fluorite
Here's where you'll find your strong stripes, serious stripes.  Clear and purple, plain as day.  A little blue or green now and then, too.  Each one is terribly unique; I can't choose a favorite out of the dozens we have!

Blue Fluorite
This is a new stone.  A very dark blue-green color, but not translucent like Fluorite usually is.  In fact, I would not have guessed this was Fluorite at all if I hadn't been specifically told.  The surface is sort of "crackly" and crystally.  I like them!

Carnelian
Your typical Carnelian, shimmering red, orange, yellow, sometimes all three colors in one stone.

Amazonite
We used to have a few Amazonite marbles, but those were pretty solidly colored.  These have the typical light aqua color, but have ample white striping to pretty them up.  Much more interesting than the last ones we carried.

Columbite
This is a new stone for me.  It's a metallic looking brown thang.  Some yellowish markings on the surface.  It's hard to appreciate unless you sort of turn it around in your hand a couple of times.  These marbles are on the "wobbly" side, so don't buy them thinking you are going to play precision games with them.  They won't shoot straight.  But they look fine on a shelf.

Stone Fun Facts
Sapphire
** The mineral Corundum is clear and colorless.  When it is colored red or deep pink from chemical impurities, it is called Ruby.  When it is colored any other color, it is called Sapphire.  You can read some general information about Corundum HERE.
** While Sapphires can come in virtually any color other than red, the cornflower blue type is the most highly valued.  The blue color comes from impurities of iron and titanium.  Sapphires usually show pleochroism, which means that they look different colors when viewed in different lights.  Darker-colored Sapphires ore sometimes considered to be "male" stones, while the lighter colors are "female" stones.
** The name Sapphire comes from the Latin sapphirus, which means "blue."
** Crystals healers use Serpentine to treat colic, disorders of the blood and skin, depression, poor hearing, and nosebleeds.  Sapphire is thought to promote generosity, good manners, wisdom, noble thoughts, peace between enemies, and protection against fraud and envy.  It was once thought to darken with infidelity, so husbands would give them to their wives before leaving on extended journeys.  It encourages truth, sincerity, and devotion, and therefore makes a good stone for an engagement ring.
** Traditionally, Sapphires have been associated with royalty.  Kings would wear them for protection.
** Ancient Persians believed the earth rested on a Sapphire, and that its color was reflected in the sky.
** Sapphire is the traditional birthstone for September, and is the Fall Gemstone of the Season.  Here is where I usually put the anniversaries that the gemstone traditionally covers, but in doing the research on Sapphire, I found lots of conflicting information from one source to another.  Suffice it to say, various sources name Sapphire as the official gemstone for the 2nd, 5th, 15th, 23rd, 26th, 30th, 45th, 50th, and 65th anniversaries!  I cannot vouch for the accuracy for any one of these, but a few anniversaries that tended to come up more than others were the 5th, 23rd, and 45th.  Take it all with a grain of salt!

News & Stuff
Google AdWords Update
In the last issue, I talked about having signed up for Google AdWords, which puts my ads on the right side of any particular Google page.  The first few weeks didn't see much of a difference, but since the last Newsletter I have noticed a sizable increase in sales, particularly of non bead items (as you can see by the "This Fortnight's Top Sellers" below), with stone eggs and marbles reaching new sale heights.  Hopefully this trend will continue!

We Now Have Discounted Priority Shipping
Up until a week or two ago, the only way you could use your $1.00 off repeat customer coupon was to choose first class mail.  Now, you have the option of choosing Priority mail as well.  I have found that Priority seems to be the favored method of shipment for quite a few people, and our repeat customers are already taking advantage of this with their discount coupons.  Look for discounted UPS shipping in the next week or two as well.

On Good Customer Service, Part Two
I believe in good customer service.  I believe that when you make a little boo-boo or someone ends up not being particularly happy with the items or prices, you do what you can to make it better.  I give the occasional refund, I hold the occasional hand when a package seems awfully late, I make occasional returns when I mess up.  It's just what good sellers do.
Recently, I bought an item on eBay.  The price was one cent, with a shipping charge of $49.99.  Now, I personally dislike sellers who so blatantly avoid paying their rightful fees by charging exorbitant shipping on a one-cent item.  They only pay fees on the penny, but they get the entire $50.  (Apparently there is some talk that eBay might soon start charging fees for the entire amount, including shipping, which will even out the playing field between honest sellers who pay their rightful fees and the dishonest ones who make their fee-free profit through shipping.)  But this was an item I really wanted, so I bucked up and paid.
A while later, I got the item, and there was a small part that was damaged, rendering the item unusable.  I wrote and asked if I could exchange it, and they gave me the address to send it back.  I shipped it back to them at my expense (nearly $10), and waited for my replacement.
The replacement came, and it had the EXACT same thing wrong with it!  I was really disappointed in the item and in the seller.  I wrote to ask if I could just get my money back entirely.  I certainly didn't want to spend another $10 to ship back the same defective item, only to risk having them send ANOTHER defective item.  I asked for my full refund, plus the initial $10 I had spent sending the first bad one back to them, seeing as how my shipping it back didn't solve the problem.  They gave me the address and said they would cheerfully refund my money when they received the item.
A while goes by, then I get my PayPal refund.  The refund was for ONE CENT.  When I asked what was up, they pointed me to the fine print in the auction, where it said, "We cheerfully refund on all purchases if you are not satisfied.  Shipping & handling is non-refundable."
So now I am out the original fifty bucks I paid PLUS an additional $20 for the two times I shipped it back, and I still have no product!  I was completely fed up and just asked to have the stupid thing sent back to me.  I could sell it as a non-working display item and make some of my money back, or maybe give it to a local theatre for a prop, or something else that was marginally worthwhile.  They agreed to send it back, but of course, I would have to "...please remit shipping of $49.99..."
Seriously, what kind of customer service is this?  How can people get away with this?  (I filed a PayPal investigation, but since they had already "refunded," it was denied.)  eBay wants so badly for us to believe that any trading outside of eBay is unsafe, and yet the only two times I have been burned in transactions was through eBay.  They won't do anything about it because they will say I should have read the fine print, and the fact that the both items were defective is my word against the seller's.  The seller has a feedback rating of over 4000 (I can't imagine how, with ethics like that), whereas the account on which I was buying was less than 100.  Who is eBay going to believe?
It's times like this that just make me want to redouble my efforts at good customer service.  My packages have been going out a little quicker than usual these days, and when one customer recently bought something that was no longer in stock, I made up for it by including a few freebies for her.  None of this is going to get my $70 back from that awful seller, but at least I will have the knowledge that *I* am not leaving "MY" customers in the terrible position I am now in.
