Stone Fun Facts
Sandalwood
Not truly a "Stone," I love the scent of this herb,
and since we sell Sandalwood products, I felt it deserved some recognition in
this section. In doing the research on this, I gained a new appreciation
and respect for this rare and threatened wood.
** Sandalwood is a small evergreen
tree with yellow to maroon flowers. It lives as a parasite for the first
seven or so years of its life. It is native to India, but will also grow
in similar climates.
** The essential oil comes from the
heartwood deep in the mature tree. It takes about 50-60 years for a tree
to be ready for harvest. The tree is harvested by uprooting rather than
cutting, because the most fragrant oils are found in the roots. The bark
and the flowers have no scent at all.
** At the time of harvest, careful
records are kept of every scrap of wood, including the smallest chips and
sawdust. Sandalwood is becoming endangered due to careless harvesting, so
each harvest is carefully monitored to reduce the likelihood of stealing.
(Currently, Australian plantations are growing new groves, but it will be
another half-century before these trees are ready for commercial harvest.)
Despite all trees in India belonging to the government (including those on
private property, for which the owner is entitled to 75% of the tree's value
upon harvest), illegal poaching of trees happens regularly. Currently,
there is only one Sandalwood producing factory in India that is permitted to
export the oil and wood, but this doesn't stop smugglers from exporting
it. It is important, when buying Sandalwood, to make sure it was brought
to the States legally.
** Sandalwood is thought to have been in use for over
4,000 years. Its fragrance is warm and sensual, unlike any other in the
world. It is used extensively in religious ceremonies.
** Used externally, Sandalwood is
thought to be good for skin disorders of all types. It moisturizes aging
skin, and is used as an astringent. Be warned, however, that allergic
reactions can occur in some people, particularly those with very sensitive
skin. For this reason, Sandalwood oil should not be used by children or
women who are pregnant or nursing.
** Internally, Sandalwood is thought
to aid in disorders of the stomach and digestive system. It is useful in
treating urinary tract infections, and in reducing fever, especially the fever
associated with sunstroke.
** Aromatherapists use the fragrance
of Sandalwood in a large variety of situations. It can lift depression,
help one to breathe more clearly, and reduce stress. It is used as a sleep
aid and an aphrodisiac.
** The Hindi word for the Sandalwood
tree is chandan.

News & Stuff
Guest Book Hilarity Gone Seriously
Bad
Last week, I reported on how
spammers were filling up my guest book with tons of ads for assorted drugs and
other nonsense. Since then, I have put an irritated warning on that page
telling people that they may NOT spam the book. The result is that I've
had at least twice as many spam messages as before. Since I don't really
have time to delete 25 messages from my guest book each day, I have decided to
completely remove the guest book, if only temporarily. I figure the
spammer (the messages sound amazingly alike, so I am assuming it is one person
doing most of the work) probably has me in his or her favorites and goes there
every day to fill up the book, and when s/he discovers that the book is no
longer there, s/he may give up. Fast forward two or three weeks, and I'll
try reinstating it. Anyway, anyone who wished to get a look at the guest
book before it goes bye-bye had better get there quickly, because I plan to shut
it down mid-week.
Santa Letter Catastrophe
When I introduced my hand-written
Letters
From Santa a few weeks back, failed to I discuss the reason
for the price increase. When I had them at $2.00 each, I lost about $30
altogether after about 20 letters. I hadn't taken into account all the
costs involved. So I raised the price to $6, which covers all the supplies
and gives me a couple of bucks for my hour or two of work. Still pretty
cheap, but at least now I get paid.
As many of you know, I recently
joined up with Google AdSense, which puts my ads on the right-hand side of the
Google search page. Each ad costs an average of 30 cents when
clicked. I decided to create an ad for my Santa letters. A few days
after submitting this ad campaign, I got orders for ten letters within a few
days. Wow. I knew the ads were working.
But as quickly as they came, they
stopped. I thought maybe I had used up my daily allocations, and went to
my account to increase my daily allowance. Turns out that I got almost 600
clicks on that ad, which ended up costing me a whopping
$180.00! Okay, let's see. Ten letters at six bucks
each equals $60.00. Minus two or three dollars per letter for
supplies and postage. So for this $30-40 I earned, I paid out $180.
Needless to say, the ad came down
immediately. I still sell the letters and occasionally have someone find
me through eBay, but the Google ad thing ended up being a catastrophic financial
disaster!
Labels!
Anyone who has ordered chip beads recently will notice something
new--LABELS on the little bags! After getting a few stones consistently
mixed up, I decided it would be prudent to start putting labels on them.
(Plus, this makes it easier for other members of the household to help fill
orders.) I hope to eventually get labels on the non-chip beads as well,
though since those are more varied in size and shape, it is easier to tell them
apart. In the meantime, enjoy knowing EXACTLY what is in your bags!
