Sandalwood Bookmarks
Like our Sandalwood Fans, these don't have what I would call a
strong Sandalwood fragrance. Since writing info about Sandalwood in the Stone Fun
Facts, I now assume these were made from the less expensive outer wood,
where the scent is much weaker. These bookmarks are delicate and
lovely. They are very thin, and painted with assorted floral
designs.
New Chip Beads
A couple of interesting new stones.
Color Change Garnet
I was really exited about these, but upon inspection they
aren't as cool as they should be. Color change Garnets are awesome in
faceted gemstones--they have distinct changes between green and gray or pink
when viewed from different lights. When you string a bunch of irregular
chips together, though, the color change isn't that noticeable. Each
individual chip has a small degree of color change properties in itself, but
together they just look like chips that are mainly green with a little gray or
pink. These are cool to get if you simply like the idea of a color change
Garnet, but don't expect spectacular color change in finished
jewelry.
Multicolor Mother of Pearl
Really fun! All sorts of bright colors, bold big
shapes. This is the type of bead for the very adventurous!
Cognac Amber
Similar in color to our usual dark Amber chips, but bigger and
with an interesting crackled surface over each chip. These are my favorite
of all our Amber beads.
Rondell Beads
Six new stones in 6mm Rondell Beads.
Choose from Goldstone, Black Onyx, Red Aventurine, White Howlite, Yellow Jade,
and wonderfully colorful Rainbow Fluorite. See them all at the top of the
Misc. Beads page here:

Gold & Myrrh
As of yet, we don't carry anything made from Frankincense (do they make
Frankincense chip beads? I'd love to get them!), but since we carry 2/3 of
the original gifts to Jesus, I thought it would be appropriate to profile them
in this particular issue!
Gold
** Gold is the most highly valued metal in the world, in all cultures. Its
beauty and usefulness is unsurpassed by any other. It has been known and used
since prehistoric times, and its value has never wavered. ** Gold is
indestructible. Being completely non-reactive, it will not rust, corrode, or
tarnish. It is 100% recyclable, and is regularly used in medical, industrial,
and electrical applications. It is highly ductile (meaning it can be drawn into
a very thin thread), and is so malleable that one ounce of Gold can be beaten
into 300 square feet of Gold Leaf. It can be rolled out so thin that light will
shine through it. ** Gold is found naturally by itself, with no other
elements contaminating it. It is usually mixed with other elements (such as
copper or silver) to aid its usefulness, according to the intended purpose. Its
purity is measured in carats. 24 carats is pure Gold; 18 carats is an alloy that
contains 75% Gold. ** Gold is the world's only naturally-occurring yellow
metal. Its primary color is yellow, but is also sometimes found in black, red,
and purple. ** Gold is incredibly rare, and only comprises about five
ten-millionths of the earth's crust. ** The word "gold" comes from the Old
English word geolo, meaning "yellow." ** Gold is the traditional gift
for the 50th wedding anniversary. ** While the 1849 Gold Rush makes us think
of California as a big mining spot, most Gold in America is mined in Nevada and
the Dakotas.
Myrrh
** Even though we have it in the form of beads, Myrrh is not a gemstone. It
is the resinous sap from a desert tree called the dindin. The sap forms in small
beads and has a very sharp, strong smell. (Our beads have a much more mild
smell, because they were made from the by-product of the sap after the strong
oils were removed.) ** Myrrh has been used since ancient times in perfumes,
incense, and embalming. The ancient Egyptians used Myrrh to preserve mummies.
Today, it is used in any application that warrants fragrance, such as candles,
soaps, etc. It is also found in several commercial mouthwashes. ** While it
is usually known for its smell, Myrrh can also be used as a flavoring for candy
and baked goods. (Our Myrrh beads smell like cinnamon-vanilla cookie dough, and
my 9-month-old baby loves to chew on his own strand!) ** Myrrh has a large
number of healing uses. It is an astringent and antiseptic, and can be used to
cure acne, boils, and other inflammations of the skin. It is also widely used to
help heal infections of the mouth, such as gingivitis, ulcers, and bad breath.
It is highly useful in applications of the throat, and is thought to help heal
pharyngitis, bronchitis, sinusitis, asthma, and sore throat. It can be used as
an expectorant (cough syrup). ** Myrrh makes a helpful childbirth aid, making
contractions more efficient, and relieving pain. ** The word "myrrh" comes
from the Arabic murr, meaning "bitter." ** The ancients found this
resin to be so valuable, the Bible tells of it being given as a gift, along with
Frankincense (another aromatic resin) and Gold to the baby Jesus. ** Modern
science has recently discovered that Myrrh may be a cure for cancer! Laboratory
studies show that a compound in Myrrh was effective in killing breast cancer
cells. More research on this is currently in the works.

New About Me Page
Recently, eBay gave me a slap on the wrist
regarding links violations on my About Me page, and removed it (before giving me
a chance to find out exactly what was wrong, by the way). I just set up a
new page. It looks similar to the old one, but contains LESS information
about things you can buy at Ephemerala Online. (They didn't like me
talking about my online store, even though sellers are permitted to put the
links and banners on their page.) I have also added assorted links to my
website for information and entertainment--all of which are hopefully within
eBay's guidelines! Please check out the new page:
Postal Increases Early Next Year
Some of you may be aware that the United States
Postal Service will be raising its rates by 10% on January 8. How will
this affect Ephemerala?
I am going to keep the regular First Class
shipping costs as they are for the time being. If, over time, I see a
significant difference between what customers pay and the actual cost, I will
consider raising it, but for now I'd like to try keeping it at the usual $1.00
base fee with a small added fee for each item (currently 10 cents for small
items, and more for heavier items).
I will be raising the cost of Priority shipping to
a base fee of $4.50, up from the old base fee of $4.00. This change will
take place in exactly one week.
I don't think I will raise the costs of
International shipping right now until I see what the difference might be, and
of course, UPS prices are not changing.
