New Items
Coprolites
These are perhaps more
aptly known as "Dino Doo." My old Earth Science professor used to call them
"Fossilized Foo-foo." Whatever you want to call them, these are little piles of
unmentionable stuff that have sat around for so long that they turned into
rocks. While some Coprolites just look like rocks, there is no doubt as to what
our Coprolites are! The form is unmistakable on every single one. Would
this make a good gift? It depends on how good of a sense of humor your recipient
has. (HINT: Kids absolutely love these.)
Crystal Globes
Extremely cool clear globes with the continents etched on. This is
one of those items that I have personally chosen to display in my home.
Each one is about 60mm in diameter, and has a prismatic base to give it a nice
colorful detail when on display. If you are a lover of geography like I
am, you'll love this!
Mini Chips in Specific Stones
Lots of people ask if we sell our Mini
Un-drilled Gem Chips in specific stones. We used to do special orders
for those who asked, but now we have them for everyone. Fifty (or
thereabouts) little un-drilled chips in a bag. Choose from over 30
different stone types.
Selenite Eggs
Selenite is a wonderful and rather rare natural stone that effectively
mimics the characteristic shimmer of man-made Fiber Optic Cat's Eye. These
are shimmering white stone eggs, very striking displayed on a dark
background. Trés cool.
Large Fluorite Eggs
A rainbow of colors to choose from. Each is listed individually, so
what you see is what you get, and when they're gone, they're gone. Check
them out on the Eggs page:

Stone Fun Facts
Muscovite Quartzite
** Before getting into detail, let's break this
stone down into its components. Muscovite Quartzite is a Quartzite
rock with inclusions of Muscovite Mica flakes. The reddish color of the
flakes comes from iron deposits in the Muscovite, and the flakes give the entire
stone a reddish sheen under the translucent Quartz.
** Quartzite is a metamorphic rock that is formed when pure
Quartz Sandstone is exposed to high temperatures and pressure. It has
compact, well-formed grains of clear to cloudy Quartz. It is very strong,
and is a raw material in the glass and ceramic industries. Quartzite is
often dyed bright colors to make tumbled stones, but our Muscovite Quartzite
gets its color from the Muscovite in it.
** Muscovite is a dark version of the mineral called
Mica. Mica is best known for its strong one-sided cleavage, which makes it
split into very thin layers. The layers can get so thin as to be
transparent, and thus Muscovite was once used as a window glass
substitute.
** Muscovite is very soft (about 2-3 on Moh's scale), but it
is surprisingly durable, tough, and flexible.
** Muscovite gets its name from the Muscovy state in Russia,
where the mineral was used as a glass substitute in the 14th century.
** Muscovite used to be known as isinglass, and it was
commonly used on furnaces, to allow people to look through the furnace as they
would with tempered glass today.
** Today, Muscovite is ground and used to give wallpaper a
shiny luster. It is also used in eye makeup and glitter.
** The rock Muscovite Quartzite, however, has very limited
uses. We were able to get some chip beads in this stone, but I have not
seen it elsewhere in jewelry applications. Perhaps its beauty and
durability will eventually make it a nice stone for cabs and beads.

News & Stuff
"Limit Per Order" Explained
Every now and then we encounter some confusion
over what we mean when we say there is a limit of a certain number of free gifts
"per order," or that the Penny Sale allows
you to include one penny item "per order." Some people don't realize that
they cannot just pile on the Penny Sale items once they reach that magic $10
mark, or they think that since they made a $70 purchase, that entitles them to
seven penny items. Others may include a Penny Sale item in one order, then
neglect to claim another one when they order again the same week.
To clarify, the limits "per order" simply mean
that in this particular order you are placing, there is a limit to the
number of special items you can include. Whether your order is $10 or
$300, you only get one Penny Sale item. If you order again four
minutes later, you get another penny item. If our sale says there is
a limit of five free gifts per order, that means no matter what the total amount
or number of eligible items you buy, you can only earn up to five free
gifts. Again, if you place a second order during the sale period, you get
to start fresh on the freebies and specials (I have seen people place four or
five different orders in a single week, all of which were eligible for the
premiums), but each individual paid-for order has its own limits.
