New Items
Glass Eggs
Easter is coming soon, and in preparation I am going to try to list as many eggs as possible.  I've gotten a great supply of colored Alabaster eggs, as well as a bunch of others in various stone.  Right now, we have small glass eggs newly listed.  They are white with colored swirls.  You can choose from a half dozen colors, and the price is pretty reasonable.

Wholesale Mini Gem Chips
On the request of several customers, we've created a wholesale listing for our mini gem chips (undrilled).  These are great when you want a whole lot of little chip to decorate boxes, ornaments, sunglasses, your bathroom wall (set them in wet plaster!), shoes, etc.  I recently got a clear plastic container, filled it a third of the way with mini gem chips, and glued the cap on, for a unique rattle for my little niece.  She'll be the only baby in her peer group with a rattle made of REAL gems!  These gems have dozens of uses, and they're so fun to just sort through.  And by the way, our Value Packs are on sale this week!

Value Packs of Gemstone Beads
We've had several Chips Value Packs for a long time, but it occurred to us that we should have Value Packs with non-chip beads as well.  Here you go!  Choose from a collection of ten bags, twenty bags, or a whoppin' 50 bags.  Great for the serious beader!  (And yes, these are on sale this week too.)  See them at the top of the Value Packs page:

New Chip Beads
We have TONS of new chips.  Here are a bunch of them, but we'll be listing more soon!

Azurite Malachite
There is a genuine stone that is like this, but it's really rare in nature and hard to work with.  So what folks do is take little crumbly bits of the two stones, press them together with clear resin, and form them into new stones.  So this is sort of man-made, but the stones are real.  It's a really nice mixture of dark blue and green together.

Chinese Rhyolite
This is THE most disappointing stone I've ever seen for a chip. It's like they just scooped up some driveway gravel and drilled holes through it.  It's a nondescript gray, with no interesting markings whatsoever.  It's definitely not what you expect from Rhyolite.  I don't even think it comes from China.  If you plan to get this (you won't), you need to do it now because when this sells out (it won't) I am not buying any more.  Seriously, it's barely even worth clicking on the link to see it.

White Marble
A stark white stone, sort of a rough finish.  Very bright white; I like it.

Chinese Picture Jasper
Kinda dull, kinda like most other tan/brown Jaspers.  I guess when there is a very slight difference in pattern, the folks at the Gem-Naming Committee (is there even one of those?) feel it needs a whole new name, so here we have Chinese Picture Jasper.  Buy it if regular Picture Jasper just isn't Chinese enough for you.

Brown Jasper
Bleh, another dull stone.  This has tiny light brown crackling marks on a darker background.  I don't like it, but someone will.

Multicolor Quartz
This is a collection of every color of glass "Quartz" ever known to mankind, EVER.  If you can envision a color, you'll find it here.

Millefiori
These are odd, beautiful little beads.  I am not very familiar with Millefiori (but I eventually will be), so I can't tell you exactly what these are, but basically they are little colored glass bits within clear glass.  There is all manner of designs and colors here.  I mean, these are GORGEOUS.  I understand that there's a small subsection of beaders who are absolutely mad over Millefiori, so here's to you!

Multicolor Crackle Quartz
These beads occur when you take clear Quartz, get it really really hot, plunge it into ice water, then dip it in a vat of dye.  The ice water causes the stones to crack, and then dye gets in the cracks.  These are a mixture of pastel colors.  Very spring-like!

White Opalite
This differs slightly from our regular Opalite in that it's more opaque, so you get a LOT more of that fabulous blue fire that Opalite is so famous for.  Limited quantities.

Candy Glass
Take a look at these and you'll see exactly why they are called Candy Glass.  They look good enough to eat!  A mix of yummy colors (think grape, lemon, cherry...) to mess with.  These will have all the kids lining up next to you for a taste.

Stone Fun Facts
Chrome Diopside
** Diopside is a mineral that is found in metamorphic limestone rocks, igneous basalts, and meteorites.  It comes in a variety of colors, but its most notable gem-quality material is a rich green, colored with chromium, which is called Chrome Diopside or Chromium Diopside.
** While Chrome Diopside ranges in color from deep dark green to colorless, its preferred color is green.  It has a deep color saturation, so the larger the stone, the darker the color.  For this reason, you rarely see good gemstones that are larger than 5 carats, as the color in larger stones tends to look black rather than green.  It is sometimes chatoyant (shows an "eye" due to layers of rutile within it), and these stones are cut in cabochons, but most Chrome Diopside is faceted.
** Chrome Diopside is mainly mined in Africa and Russia.  It is sometimes referred to as Russian Diopside due to its location.
** This gem is fairly soft and heat sensitive.  It should be kept from sudden extreme temperature changes and chemicals.  It is generally not suitable for everyday wear.
** The name "Diopside" comes from the Greek dis, meaning "two," and opsis, meaning "vision.  This is due to its occasional pleochroism (the property of looking a slightly different color when viewed from different angles)
** Called the "Crying Stone," Chrome Diopside is thought to aid in healing traumas by bringing cleansing tears.  It helps in mending relationships and improving the ability to trust.  Wearing the stone helps to ease deep fears.
** Crystal healers use Chrome Diopside as an aid in problems of the heart, lungs, and circulation.  It is thought to improve intellect, analytical abilities, and creativity.
** This stone is sometimes sold under the trademark name of "Vertelite," which is Latin for "green tone."

News & Stuff
Chips Sale Continues
We are keeping last fortnight's Chips sale for a while, to see how business goes.  If we see a significant increase in sales, we will probably reduce the prices indefinitely.

New Scoop on Rainbow Calsilica
I have a friend-of-a-friend who reported being at the actual top-secret Rainbow Calsilica mine in Mexico.  For those of you who wonder if the stone is fake, I can say that this guy saw the people actually removing it from the earth.  So it is not man-made.  He has a theory as to what creates the wild colors.  He said that the mine is near a river, and upstream is the location of an ancient pottery manufacturing site.  He theorizes that the colors from the pottery flowed downstream and leached into the soil, coloring the rocks in brilliant stripes.  So the rock actually comes out of the ground, but its coloration might be due to humans of thousands of years gone by.
