New Items
Swarovski Flat Backed Rhinestones
I got a small number of these as a gift from a wholesaler, and didn't want to use them for myself, so I decided to try selling them on the site.  Bear in mind, I have absolutely no idea how much these sell for ordinarily.  I may be pricing them way too high (let me know if this is the case) or too low (I assume no one will let me know if THIS is the case!); I just don't know one way or another.  The size is 16SS which I guess means 4mm round.  We've got six colors available, sold in packets of ten rhinestones.  They are on the Closeouts page, since they are not something I plan to replace when gone.  Bling!

Geode Pendants with Crystals
These are amazing.  Each pendant consists of a split geode, with the glittery crystals inside.  The edges are covered with gold electroplate, and in the center of each geode is a single crystal of your choice of Quartz, Amethyst, Citrine, or Tourmaline.  Each is unique, and each is absolutely stunning.  I do not regularly wear jewelry myself, but I actually have been known to wear these.

Acrylic Bug Pendants
What a fun summer gift!  These are real bugs preserved in clear acrylic.  This is sure to be a conversation starter.  As with the geode pendants above, I've actually worn these bug necklaces.  Kids love 'em.

Utah Wonderstone Magnets
One of our nicest native stones is Utah Wonderstone, a striped sandstone that puts regular old Picture Jasper to shame.  We've got our Wonderstone in magnets.  Each is very pretty.

Bug & Frog Magnets
Fun stuff!  Whimsical magnets look just like real bugs.  We've got Butterflies, Dragonflies, and Frogs in a rainbow of colors.  Put one of these on your fridge and you'll get some startled gasps.  See them all on the Misc. Gifts page here:

"Everything" Bead Mixes
When I am pulling beads off of strands for bagging, there are often "oddball" beads that need to get set aside.  Some are too large or too small.  Some are shapes on a chip strand, or chips on a shape strand.  Sometimes you'll find a lone rose quartz bead on a moss agate strand.  Sometimes there are a few beads left over and I don't feel like saving them.  Sometimes someone sends me a random bead strand that doesn't have enough beads to bother bagging up.  All of these oddballs get put into a box.  When I get enough, I like to sell these on eBay.  Ordinarily, I prefer to list things on our website and avoid eBay, but for grab bags like this, I prefer to let the public determine the selling price.
I've got three lots of a quarter pound of beads for sale right now.  Bear in mind that these lots contain HUGELY random beads.  Some will be abundant (such as if a strand breaks and scatters among other beads and I don't feel like picking them all out), and some will match NOTHING.  These are truly for the adventurous.  There are also a few findings, bits of jewelry, cabs, faceted gems, and now and then something just a little bit precious!  Each lot contains about 500-1000 beads.  You can see them on my eBay Items For Sale page here:
(These auctions end on Sunday night, so if you plan to bid, please keep that in mind.)

Stone Fun Facts
Kyanite
** Kyanite is a very unusual stone in that it has two hardnesses on Moh's Scale, depending on the direction it is tested.  It grows in crystals shaped like long, flat blades, and it cleaves along perfect lines.  Whereas other minerals have the same hardness all around, Kyanite shows a hardness of 4-5 when tested lengthwise, and 6-7 (harder) when tested crosswise.
** While Kyanite is typically a blue color, it sometimes comes in green, white, and yellow.  It exhibits strong pleochroism, which means it looks different colors when viewed from different angles.  Its color can look dark blue from one angle, and white or colorless from another.
** The word "Kyanite" comes from the Greek kyanos, which means "blue," in reference to its color.  This mineral is also known as Disthene, which comes from the Greek di, meaning "two," and stenos, meaning "hardness," a name given because it has two hardnesses.
** Metaphysical healers use Kyanite as a claming stone.  It helps to focus the mind and dissolve mental and emotional confusion.  It helps the wearer let go of his or her anxiety.  It keeps the mind focused and able to ward off distractions.
** Kyanite is thought to be a highly creative stone, enabling the wearer to tap into his or her creative talent in art, music, dance, writing, and other artistic expressions.
** Gem-quality Kyanite is extremely rare.  Its perfect lines of cleavage and its brittle, splintery nature make it very difficult to cut, and stones of fine color and transparency are rare.
** Commercially, Kyanite is used in the manufacture of spark plugs and heat resistant ceramics.

New E-Mail Address
The spam problem mentioned last month increased exponentially until it took up to eight minutes simply to check e-mail (thousands of messages were stopped by the filters, though hundreds of them came through anyway).  Our new business e-mail address is suzanne@ephemerala.com.  Please use this one when writing.  I apologize for any messages in the last month or two that went without replies.  If you wrote anything that even remotely resembled an ad in your reply, the message never got to me.  Hopefully within a month we'll be back to normal.

USPS Rates Change Monday
As many of you know by now, the United States Post Office is raising their prices yet again.  Last year, when the last hike went into effect, I did not change the shipping costs on our website.  Once again, we are going to TRY to keep the costs as they are, but I don't know how possible this will be.  As before, we'll try the same old costs on a wait-and-see basis.

New eBay Feedback System
If you are a buyer on eBay and have recently left feedback for a seller, you will have noticed the new eBay feedback system.  The first change is that after leaving the standard positive/neutral/negative rating and comment, buyers can now rate their sellers with a 5-star system (called a Detailed Seller Rating) in areas of item description, communication, shipping time, and shipping cost (but not packaging, which I find strange, since that's more important than shipping time).  This is similar to the feedback system on amazon.com, with the difference that the star ratings on eBay are anonymous.  (The reason for the anonymity, according to eBay, is so that buyers can "accurately rate a transaction without fear of retaliation."  In other words, buyers can leave a positive rating, then leave low star ratings to damage the seller's reputation without risking getting a negative in return from the seller.)  The other change is that on any buyer's feedback page, each comment now shows the item title in question, its ID number, and its selling price.
While I like the idea of a 5-star rating system (even though it means our feedback will start to look less-than-perfect!), I don't like the fact that the star rating is anonymous.  I feel it would be very helpful for a seller to know exactly which transactions were worthy of less-than-perfect ratings, so that we can have the chance to correct our actions in the future.  I don't engage in retaliatory feedback (I rate each transaction honestly), but I guess a lot of buyers are worried about getting a negative if they find something wrong with the sale.
What I absolutely do NOT like, however, is the item title and price showing on the feedback page itself.  Some people find this to be an invasion of privacy, but I don't think this (after all, the items were always available to view with just a click anyway), but my goodness, does it ever clutter up the feedback page!  Often the item title, number, and price is longer than the actual feedback, so it's hard for the eye to focus on the feedback comments alone.  Check out my eBay feedback page and you'll see what I mean:
While this isn't a terribly important matter, I am interested to hear what other eBay users think of the new feedback.  Drop me a line and let me know!

Fortnightly Sale
Not a Sale So Much as a Pledge...
Yes, this is still going on.
My husband, Jerry, has in the past participated in the Muscular Dystrophy Association's "Lock Up" program, whereby he gets "arrested" by the MDA and has several hours to raise his "bail," which is the goal he sets for himself.  He has always created a web page to accept online donations, in addition to encouraging his friends and family to raise his bail.
A few days after we got our son Ewan's diagnosis of Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy, the MDA called Jerry to participate in their yearly lock-up.  (This was a coincidence, by the way; at this point the MDA had not yet been alerted to Ewan's condition.)  While Jerry willingly agreed to participate in the past, this year he has a very real reason to do so.  Again, he has created a web page to accept online donations.  He has set a goal of $1,800 bail, and we hope to raise this much with donations AND through a special pledge I am making through Ephemerala.
For the next week (ending on May 22, the deadline for Jerry's Lock-Up), Ephemerala will donate to the MDA 50 cents for every dollar you spend in our store.  Obviously this is a very important issue for us, so we thought that since Jerry's MDA Lock-Up is this month, it would be appropriate for Ephemerala to get involved as well.
If you've been thinking about making a purchase, this fortnight would be a good time to do it.  Each dollar you spend will be 50 cents the MDA will get.  Since we are currently in a race for time to find a cure before it is too late for Ewan, these donations mean the world to us today.
Please consider placing your Ephemerala order this week.  For an addendum to this offer that directly benefits our newsletter subscribes, please see the "Insider's Sale" below.
This Fortnight's Sale is good through May 22, 2007

Penny Sale
Every two weeks, I hide a new special offer somewhere on my online site.  This listing will offer a certain product for ONE CENT, with any purchase of $10.00 or more.  The item and its location will change every two weeks, so be sure to look often.  Simply go to my online store site:
and browse until you find the hidden listing.  Add it to your cart, along with the rest of your $10.00+ order, and it will be included for just a penny.  Happy Hunting!
(Recent keen-eyed customers got a GEMSTONE CABOCHON for a penny!  What will you be able to get this week?)
P.S. We finally changed the Penny Sale!

Insider's Special
Gift Certificates to Match Your MDA Donation!
In addition to our 50 cents on the dollar pledge above, I am making a very special offer to our subscribers who choose to donate directly to the MDA in the next week (ending May 22).  When you make a donation, we will send you a gift certificate for the exact amount you pledge.  This means that if you donate $50, you will get a $50 gift certificate.  A donation of $200 will get you $200 from our store; a donation of $2,000 will get you a $2,000 gift certificate, and so on.  For those of you who know you will eventually be making a purchase from Ephemerala, you might as well put that money toward the MDA's efforts right now, and then use your gift certificate to get your Ephemerala stuff whenever you like.
There is just one thing I ask.  When you make the donation, please write to me to let me know your name and e-mail, so that I will know where to send the gift certificate code.  There is no way for us to identify the donors other than their names, and while sometimes it is easy to find a subscriber's e-mail address just by looking at her name (example, if Jenny Johnson's e-mail address is jennyjonson@ yahoo.com), other times it's not so easy to tell.  So right after you make your donation, please contact us with your e-mail address and pledge amount, and we'll send you your gift certificate code.  You have absolutely nothing to lose, and your help will be so appreciated.  This is our gift to you for caring.
You can find Jerry's MDA Lock-Up page here:
This is the page he created to collect donations for his "bail."  As a special double-whammy note, if our customers chose to make their donations first, then receive their gift certificates and use them in the store before May 22, their store orders would ALSO go toward the goal as per our sale above!  So this is a great way to make a purchase and help a LOT!
This Fortnight's Insider's Sale is good through May 22, 2007
