July 2-15, 2007
No, you didn't miss two
issues...
It's been exactly six weeks since our last "fortnightly"
newsletter. Once again, we are a bit behind. Up until about a week
ago, business was extremely slow, and when things are slow, it's hard to muster
the enthusiasm to write witty e-mail newsletters. (But I did set up a new
office--with Ephemerala colors!) This week we are back with a few new
items, a new stone profile (finally!), and the usual dish.
New Items
Tons of New Marbles!
We got in a HUGE shipment of new 18mm marbles. They were
a very good deal, so the price of these (with two exceptions) is just two
dollars. This is a good way to get a wide selection of gemstone marbles
without spending as much as you would with the 20mm ones. There are over
25 new 18mm marbles, including such never-before-offered-in-marbles stones as
Prehnite, Sardonyx, Red Malachite, China Jade, White Howlite, and Zebra
Jasper. (Plus a lot of the old favorite stones in this new size.)
Also check out our new Green Pakistan Onyx marbles--as pretty as the usual
Pakistan Onyx, but with an abundance of green.
Sphere Lovers, Look Out!
I recently visited our page for spheres 26mm and up, and
discovered that there was only one sad, lonely Ametrine sphere on the
page. I thought I had listed a lot more, but I guess not. So I got
out my handy little measuring gauge and listed over 20 NEW spheres! You
can choose from inexpensive favorites like Rose Quartz and Tiger Eye, or you can
go exotic and try Aquamarine, Ruby, or Septarian. Many of these are
one-of-a-kind. I plan to get more listed in the future, when I get to
scanning them.
New Chip Beads
Scanning and bagging takes some time, but we've managed to get
a few of our many "Coming Soon" chips ready for shipping. Check out the
latest offerings!
Riodacite
I like this stone for the dual reason that it has my son Rio's
name in it, and that some of the individual stones are the EXACT color of
my 1-year-old's eyes! (Cedric's eyes are an awesome black-gray with a tiny
bit of blue...) I'm still not quite sure what this stone is, but it's kind
of like an all-purpose neutral-colored rockish gem with little chunks of a
blue-white mineral in them. Intriguing, if not particularly
gorgeous. Unless it's seen in a baby's eyes, of course.
Chinese Chrysoprase
Dude, this stone is GREEN. Like grass green mixed with
bright green with extra green on top. I guess they grow greener
Chrysoprase in China or something. This is really beautiful; sort of puts
regular Chrysoprase to shame.
Imperial Jasper
The "King" of jaspers, this one has pretty much every color
you've every seen in your life, ever. A nice creamy mix of greens, browns,
pinks, yellows, grays, maybe even a blue in there once in a while. Nice
full smooth chips, sure to be a favorite.
Hemimorphite
This stone is really rare; I was surprised to be able to find
a large quantity of it in chip form. A strong bright aqua green.
It's like Amazonite on steroids.
Pink Zebra Jasper
This is basically Zebra Jasper with a bunch of pink impurities
in it. I am convinced that this was originally the rejects from some batch
of Zebra Jasper. Like someone at the factory got really annoyed at the
low-quality material and was about to throw it out, then some enterprising
trainee said, "Hey, let's give it a different name and sell it as a new
stone!" No matter; it's pretty, being delicate and bold at the same
time.

Stone Fun Facts
Larvikite
** Larvikite is a grayish type of rock called Feldspar, which
has some bluish highlights. The blue can occasionally look pearly or
iridescent due to crystals in the stone.
** This stone is used primarily for exterior and interior
facings in buildings. It is rarely used as jewelry, though recent years
have found it being used more and more in cabochons and
carvings. ** Larvikite comes from Scandinavia. It is also
known as Norwegian Pearl Granite, Blue Pearl, Norwegian Moonstone, and Black
Moonstone. ** While this stone is new to jewelry making, crystal
healers have already found uses for it. Larvikite is thought to help
enhance youth and vitality. It aids the brain in taking in new information
easily; it helps promote change. ** Physically, Larvikite is thought
to calm nerves and reduce blood pressure. It is an all-around calming
stone. ** The name Larvikite comes from one of its primary sources, the
Larvik Fjord Region of southern Norway.
** One of Larvikite's alternate names is "pub stone,"
because it is a common facing in British pubs.

Ephemerala on MySpace
Yes, we've joined the MySpace generation by creating a
page for our business! If you're not familiar with MySpace, it's basically
a place where you can set up your own personal web page all about yourself, and
then collect friends from the MySpace community for chatting, sharing pictures,
forming groups, or generally being friendly. I don't yet know what I plan
to do with an Ephemerala MySpace page, but I may use it to update folks on sales
and whatnot. If you would like to take a look, please go to http://www.myspace.com/ephemerala. Go
ahead and create a page if you like. If you already have a MySpace page,
feel free to add us as a friend.
Penny Sale Has FINALLY Been
Changed!
At least a half a dozen people have written to laugh at
me for keeping that poor Cat's Eye Beads Penny Sale up for like four months
straight. We're down to just a few of those left! I am happy to say
the Penny Sale HAS indeed been changed, so you will have to actually look for it
again!
More Beads?
Folks occasionally ask if we are ever going to
expand the bead portion of Ephemerala. As it stands, we have a rather
small selection of beads in various stones, shapes, and sizes, but it's really a
hodgepodge. I sometimes think of expanding the bead line to compete with
other online bead stores out there, but ultimately it seems to be a losing
battle even before it starts. There are plenty of comprehensive beads
stores to be found online. Stores that methodically provide each size,
shape, and stone you might need. Rather than the Ephemerala standard of
"If I happen to find it cheap, we'll carry it," these stores make sure that you
find exact;y what you are looking for.
Ephemerala is about chip beads, yes. We provide
chips in stones that most folks haven't even heard of. We are definitely
your one stop chip company. In this one regard, we out-class every bead
store out there. NOBODY has the chip variety that we do. But the
rest of Ephemerala is about gemmy stuff (and even some non-gemmy stuff). I
love finding new mineral items to offer, as well as world art, incense,
educational toys, and many other interesting items. To devote web space
(and dungeon space) to a larger variety of beads would give us less opportunity
to focus on the non-bead items, while still failing to compete with the bigger
bead stores.
So when we are asked if we plan to get a better variety
of beads, I have to say no. And since beads are such a slow seller for us,
when we sell out of any one type, we generally do not replace it.
"Ephemerala" means "changing things," so we sell what beads we have on hand,
but have no plans to make this particular aspect of the business a
large priority.
Help Me Spell Check!
There are a couple of people who occasionally write to
me when they find a little error in one of my listings. I'd like to
encourage anyone else who finds a spelling, punctuation, or grammatical error to
do the same. Also, if a certain page looks funny, chances are I've entered
the HTML code wrong and it should be changed. It's embarrassing to learn
that I made a small mistake, but if our keen-eyed friends spot something, I have
the opportunity to change it right away and not have dozens of other people
laugh at it later!
